Dear Bat Community,

The Indiana bat summer survey season is rapidly approaching and we are wrapping up some relatively minor edits to the forthcoming 2017 Indiana Bat Summer Survey Guidelines...

As in 2016, the IBat survey guidelines can also be used for northern long-eared bat (NLEB) surveys during the 2017 survey season.  However, this is subject to change in future years pending the outcome of ongoing data analyses being lead by USGS. We'll keep you posted as this work progresses.

After crunching the brand new 2017 winter survey population numbers for Indiana bats, we have determined that there will not be any changes needed to the survey LOE in any of the IBat Recovery Units (RUs) in 2017 (i.e., they will remain the same as last year). In a nutshell, the two RUs  that cover portions of R2, R3 and R4 states (Midwest and Ozark-Central RUs) did not yet have sufficient declines to meet our previously defined triggers for increasing the LOE for mist net surveys (as has been required in the Northeast and Appalachian RUs for several years).

We anticipate having the final 2017 survey guidelines posted on our IBat survey website within the next week or so. In the interim, please continue to use the 2016 guidance for determining the LOE for presence/absence surveys and for associated contracting purposes. The 2016 guidelines are available at
