Subject: FW: aging bats with pentosidine

Hi all,

My understanding is that, like birds, it is difficult to age bats (beyond juvenile vs. adult) in the wild. I study aging in birds and I am using the pentosidine technique for aging birds (see links below for examples of the technique). In principle, it should work well in bats and be useful to determine age in the wild and to develop, for instance, age-explicit demography models for bats. If anyone is recapturing a significant number of known-age (first caught as juveniles) Little or Big Brown Bats, I'd love to receive a wing punch (preferably 5 mm and kept frozen). Please let me know if you are interested in collaborating.
