Please note: Although the work location for this position is Buncombe County, the work projects are located statewide. There is expected to be occasional overnight travel required to complete job assignments.
The Mammalogist main job responsibilities are:

•        Identify and prioritize status, distribution, and research information needs of small/medium sized mammals, especially bats, from and for future NC Wildlife Action Plans. Periodically review and update those priorities with new information. Coordinate with internal and external parties to maintain awareness of projects being conducted and share opportunities/needs. Coordinate with DWM staff and projects to align needs with ongoing projects and avoid redundancy or inefficiency.
•        Develop and implement projects to survey, monitor, research, and/or manage selected small/medium mammal populations. Prepares proposals, narratives, reports and manuscripts containing plans, results, and analysis of data on those projects for agency reports, granting agencies, and peer-reviewed publications. •        Assists other Wildlife Management Division or agency staff on survey, monitoring, research, management or outreach projects, and other activities throughout the state as needed and directed. Assists land managers including NCWRC, State Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, National Forests, and private corporations, organizations and individuals through provision of technical guidance on management activities to benefit targeted mammal populations.
•        Provides information, outreach, and communications including programs, materials, presentations, and products (print, web, databases, etc.) to/for other agencies and the public. Serve as point of contact for other agencies and individuals regarding status and management issues related to targeted mammals.
•        Reviews and prepares written comments on various development projects and other statewide mammal conservation issues including conservation plans and other agency initiatives.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:

Knowledge of wildlife biology, mammalogy, and ecology are required. Advanced principles of scientific method, biological techniques, zoology, botany, statistics, forestry, and ecology are necessary. Experience in and knowledge of mammal sampling techniques and procedures are desirable. Accomplished communication skills (both oral and written) are required daily to coordinate with partners, disseminate information, and to help educate the public about mammal conservation and advance the NCWRC mission. The biologist should also be skilled in computer operation, database management, geographic information systems, multi-media communications and presentation, planning, and volunteer coordination. The abilities to prepare quality written reports/manuscripts and make oral presentations are required.  The abilities to function independently and work well with others are essential.

 Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in wildlife or fisheries management, zoology or biology from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in wildlife or fisheries management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Management Preference:
Graduate degree in mammalogy, zoology, wildlife biology or closely related field and Wildlife Biologist Certification preferred. In addition, at least 2 year of experience practicing mammal research, management, and conservation is preferred. Certification by The Wildlife Society is preferred. Experience with various bat species is also preferred.
