Subject: Thomas H. Kunz Fund in Biology

Dear ASM member,

As many of you know, our friend, colleague, and ASM Past President Tom Kunz suffered a serious brain injury in an accident at the bat meetings in October, 2011. Tom's past and current graduate students, led by his first PhD student, Pete August, have worked with Boston University to set up The Thomas H. Kunz Fund in Biology in honor of Tom's dedicated teaching and research career. The fund will support graduate education at Boston University.

The organizers of the fund have almost 100% participation by Tom's present and past graduate students (36 students) and the BU Biology faculty. The BU Development Office is getting ready to approach several major potential donors. Our fingers are crossed that they will be successful. But even if they fall short, they can still do great things in Tom's name with a smaller fund - grad fellowships, a student travel fund, summer research funding for grads, and so on. Already, about $70,000 has been collected.

To help spread the word, the fund organizers have developed a web site for the project (http://www.bu.edu/biology/kunzfund/ ). Instructions on donating are on the web site. Tom has been a great friend, colleague, and mentor to the ASM community. I am hopeful that many ASM members will be happy to participate, as have his students and BU colleagues.
