Folks,
It pains me to send out a correction like this however I have been inundated with inquiries; too many people have noticed my mistake and I must suck it up and re-issue this reminder but with CORRECTED dates! My website is displaying the correct dates. The idea behind having our Acoustic session first is so that those interested in taking both classes will be trained up on their acoustic gear in order to get the most from the Survey Techniques session. Sorry for the confusion; I should not send emails so late at night!

Eastern Bat Acoustic Inventory Techniques – Park City KY, 8-12 September 2013

The "Acoustic Inventory" course combines all aspects of a SonoBat software training course, but it is held
at ideal locations for collecting live recordings of bats on nightly field trips. Students will use mist-netting and harp-trapping in addition to acoustics, bat detector use, and signal analysis to determine species occupancy at each research location. The use of full-spectrum bat detectors will be featured, as will signal analysis using SonoBat software. Participants are encouraged to bring their own detectors and will leave the course with a greater familiarity of field deployment and post-processing recordings for analysis. Several models of detectors from major manufacturers including Binary Acoustic Technology, Elekon, Pettersson and Wildlife Acoustics will be on hand for students who would like to “test-drive” different models to determine which will suit their individual needs. Though signal analysis with SonoBat will be stressed, workflows for converting full-spectrum recordings to zero-cross (ZC) files will be covered as will call classification using current versions of BCID, EchoClass and Kaleidoscope Pro. Students will learn directly from noted bat biologist and software developer, Joe Szewczak (Humboldt State University) and others who power-use SonoBat for performing regional inventories and monitoring. The workshop staff has worked together over the years to help develop SonoBat to meet the demands of real biologists to solve real problems.

Eastern Bat Survey Techniques – Park City KY, 14-18 September 2013

The “Survey Techniques” course has a heavy emphasis on bat identification and physical capture study techniques using single-, double-, and triple-high mist nets in conjunction with harp-traps. It will provide a comprehensive introduction to field work with bats. Current White-nose syndrome disinfection and decontamination protocols will be demonstrated, as will protocols for performing effective bat inventories using species-specific targeting efforts. Finally, new for 2013, important natural history information about regional bat species will be shared to enhance understanding of inventory and monitoring methods for this diverse order of hard-to-study mammals.

You can view details including a comprehensive program overview, instructor biographies, accommodations at each venue, and on-line registration resources, at:

The registration link will be deactivated when we have filled the classes, so if you register successfully online you will have a seat in the workshop.
