Subject: request for assistance from OBWG

Hi Marne!

I am writing to you today in regard to the Ohio Bat Working Group. As you may know, John Cannon (of The Nature Conservancy, Ohio) was a speaker at the annual Midwest Bat Working Group meeting in Indiana in April, where he presented a model of Indiana bat summer habitat that he has been developing in cooperation with our office. I understand from August Froehlich, who works with John at TNC, that they spoke with several members of the OBWG about the presentation and the model while at the meeting. Maybe you were in attendance???

The model is now at a point in development where we are hoping to collect on-the-ground data for validation. John has put together a map of locations (attached) that would be among the most valuable for this data collection effort. What we are hoping is that some of these locations may, by chance, be among those to be/being surveyed during the current bat survey season. However, we could use some help - perhaps from OBWG members - in conducting acoustic and/or mist-net surveys at the mapped locations to determine the probable presence or absence of Indiana bats. This would be a voluntary effort. Of course, if mistnet surveys were planned, the federally permitted surveyor would need to obtain site-specific authorization from our office prior to conducting the survey; but we will make every effort to turn those approvals around immediately.

Could you please share this request with the OBWG members? If anyone is interested in conducting a survey or has any questions, they should contact me at the phone # below or this email address.

Thanks for your help!!!!
Karen
