Folks,
Janet asked me to forward the following message to the NEBWG
list....apparently our list serve rejects messages coming from west of
the Mississippi, or something or other.

Thanks,

A very smart bat biologist once said, "Everything we know about bats is
based on the stupid ones we are able to catch."

Along those lines, we could also say that everything we know about is
based on the loud ones that we are lucky enough to record?

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USF&WS) unveiled changes to the iBat
summer survey protocol at the Northeast Bat Working Group Meeting
(NEBWG) in Carlisle PA during the January 2012 meeting, These changes
will affect much of the regular bat work in the region. A public comment
period is scheduled to allow interested bat-workers to share their views
on the new protocol. To facilitate the information gathering necessary
for this effort, a public website has been created to compile
information on past, present and future work with bat monitoring and
survey methods, techniques and protocols.

The site is:

http://www.batprotocol.info

As of 8am MST on 1 February 2012, the USF&WS protocol hasn't been
released. But, in anticipation of its eminent arrival, the "bat
protocol" site will serve as a repository for references on summer
survey protocols, provide a forum for discussion about methodologies for
conducting compliance surveys, and act as a permanent archive for
comments about the proposed iBat protocol, once we have a chance to view
and review it.

Anyone can browse, download, upload, and discuss the content on the Bat
Protocol site. The forum will be monitored, and all contributions will
be reviewed, organized and accessioned. I hope you'll browse the site,
participate in the wiki-ness of the space, and use the opportunity to
share your time and talents to foster a continued understanding of what
it means to survey bats and actively participate in the birth and
nurturing of better bat protocols community-wide.
