Perhaps my previous comment should have been more tentatively stated.  It does not appear that Earnest fits into the egregious category the advisory was referring to. :)

I agree with Sarah.  I just did an interview with our local CBS affiliate about this topic.  These companies aren't operating for free. They're charging for services the Feds/servicers do for free. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau put out a consumer advisory back in 2014 when they started popping up.

There are many of these types of companies popping up now and the best advice is to steer clear of them all.  Any student who has borrowed FEDERAL student loans should only work with U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid on repaying those loans (https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans).
