[Natfinwellness] Universities with mandatory (or nearly mandatory) financial education

Hi Sue,

At the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, we use 2 methods that get at
our incoming 1st year students:

-Welcome Week presentation regarding financial wellness. We only get about
25 minutes with students in large scale presentation settings, but we feel
that it's a good jumping off point to the beginning of conversations. We
also do a "train the trainer" with our 350 Welcome Week leaders to give
them tips about financial conversations, and to prepare them to refer
properly. We also use this as an opportunity to let students know about
our 1:1 financial wellness counseling meetings.

-Transit financial wellness assessment. I would say this is an "implied
mandate", meaning we send it out with our alcohol and sexual violence
prevention modules and approximately 85% of our students end up completing
the assessment. In addition to this helping students learn about financial
wellness, it also provides us with some great statistical data that we can
use regarding credit, loans, and financial understanding.
