I found a version of MVAPICH in
http://www.openfabrics.org/downloads/OFED/ofed-1.5.4/OFED-1.5.4.1.tgz in
its SRPMS

Jeff's kind hint of

rpm2cpio ../mvapich-1.2.0-3635.src.rpm | cpio -idmv

gave me a tar file I could compile like it was MPICH1, and replicate our
customer's problem,
