No, I didn't specify "rmeshell" with mvapich2-1.5. Perhaps that is the 
problem.

I now see that this error is ocurring not just with the C code that I sent 
you but with all code compiled with mpicc. That is, code compiled with 
mpich77, mpif90, mpiCC seems to work fine.

I'll try it w/o 
--with-pm 

and see if that works. What I actually want is "mpirun_rsh" and I don't 
want the mpd utilities to be built.
