Thanks Shaun.  That did solve the problem.  I typed the ulimit -l unlimited in my window, but when one does the ssh it gets system default value.  Having that limit set in sshd resolves that issue.

Thanks for trying MVAPICH2. Have you tried putting the following in your
/etc/init.d/sshd files:

ulimit -l unlimited

and then restarting sshd first on both machines? This is noted in
section 7.2.4 of the MVAPICH2 User Guide:

We've found this necessary, in addition to modifying
/etc/security/limits.conf.
