<p><b>ACLS Fellowships and Grants 2016-17</b></p>
<p class="p1">ACLS invites applications in China Studies. With the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation, The National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation (CCK) for International Scholarly Exchange, ACLS offers support for early career scholars and for the organization of meetings, workshops, and conferences. <p class="p1"><b>Support for Early Career Scholars (Deadline: November 9, 2016)</b></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s2"><b>Luce/ACLS Predissertation-Summer Travel Grants</b>:</span> 3-4 months in 2017 for visits to China to investigate research sites and establish contacts with scholars before beginning basic research for the dissertation ($5,000).</p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s2"><b>Luce/ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowships</b>:</span> two consecutive semesters released from teaching for preparation of the PhD dissertation for publication, or for embarking on new research projects. Work proposed must be based on the applicant's research in China (up to $50,000).</p>
<p class="p1"><b>Support for Meetings, Workshops, and Conferences (Deadline: November 9, 2016)</b></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s2"><b>Luce/ACLS Collaborative Reading-Workshop Grants</b></span><b> </b>for collaborative reading of texts in a workshop format that is interdisciplinary and that crosses scholarly generations. Workshop formats may vary, but each should be based on texts that illuminate a period, tradition, culture, location, or event. At the workshop, each text may be introduced by one or two participants, with others being asked to read and explicate a portion thereof. Close reading and careful translation are thus the basis for workshop discussion. Sufficient time should be provided for sustained collaborative reading (up to $15,000).</p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s2"><b>CCK Comparative Perspectives on Chinese Culture and Society</b></span> funds proposals in the humanities and related social sciences that adopt an explicitly cross-cultural or comparative perspective. Proposals may, for example, compare aspects of Chinese history and culture with those of other nations and civilizations, explore the interaction of these nations and civilizations, or engage in cross-cultural research on the relations among the diverse and shifting populations of China (up to $25,000 for conferences; $10,000 to $15,000 for workshops and seminars; up to $6,000 for planning meetings).</p>
<p class="p4">The American Council of Learned Societies, a private, nonprofit federation of 74 national scholarly organizations, is the preeminent representative of American scholarship in the humanities and related social sciences. Advancing scholarship by awarding fellowships and strengthening relations among learned societies is central to ACLS’s work. This year, ACLS awarded more than $18 million to over 300 scholars across a variety of humanistic disciplines.</p>
