<p>The 21st century has seen some significant social and economic developments that have exerted a tremendous impact <span class="s5">on Chinese women’s lives and feminist thoughts. For example, the increasing waning of Chinese state feminism, the skyrocketing divorce </span>rate, the changing meaning and forms of family, the loosening of family planning policy from one-child to two-child, the demystification of motherhood, the rise of NGO Chinese feminist movements, the growing population of “leftover women” (<i>shengnü</i>), the making of new literary and filmic genres thanks to the increasing purchase power of female audience, the championing of hyper-feminine values, the impressive display of the “democratic” and queering potential of females in talent shows and fandom culture, the extensive use of digital technology and women’s documentary making, and the surfacing of LGBTQ movements in <span class="s3">public sphere. It is necessary to take a close look at the literary and media ramifications in the wake of those polymorphous and heterogeneous developments in the new millennium, and reposition Chinese feminism in a new mobile world dominated by information and capital flows. This seminar aims to explore a wide range of literary, filmic, and cultural products in 21</span><span class="s7"><sup>st</sup></span><span class="s3">-Century-China in </span>order to respond to the following questions:</p>
<ul>
<li>What are the salient features of Chinese literary and filmic works by, for, or about women and girls in the new century?</li>
<li>How does the everyday use of technology (DV, Internet, social media and so on) affect women’s social lives, artistic aesthetics, and self-positioning?</li>
<li>Can our imaginations of gender and sexualities be rescued from the nation, class, family, marriage, reproduction, or global consumerism?</li>
<li>How do Chinese feminist writings, criticisms, and activism respond to China’s rapid social and economic transformations?</li>
<li>How are neoliberal discourse and queer theory translated into Chinese women’s thinking and writing?</li>
<li>Are Chinese feminists avid followers of global feminism, or are they pioneering a distinct tradition of feminism with Chinese characteristics?</li>
<li>Is there any historical legacy that has been mobilized and reinvented in contemporary Chinese feminist thoughts and practices?</li>
</ul>
