<div class="tools1">The 39th Hong Kong International Film Festival kicks off this week with more than 260 films from 56 countries and territories.</div>

<p>The festival has a long history of promoting world cinema (such as this year with separate programs on contemporary German and Israeli movies), but it foremost remains a showcase for Hong Kong and Chinese-language films.</p>
<p>Here’s a look at five movies getting their world premieres at the festival, which runs until April 6.</p>
<p><strong>“<a href="http://on.wsj.com/1MLWr84">Murmur of the Hearts</a>”</strong></p>

<p>The festival opened with director Sylvia Chang’s art-house drama about loss and redemption: Set in Taiwan, the story focuses on a young painter, the brother she hasn’t seen since they were children, and her boyfriend — a down-and-out boxer. The early buzz on Macau-born actress Isabella Leong’s performance is strong, so keep watch for her name come awards season. The film, which is set for general release around parts of Asia next month, also stars Joseph Chang and Lawrence Ko.</p>
<p><strong>“Port of Call”</strong></p>

<p>Canto-pop star Aaron Kwok is almost unrecognizable as he tosses aside his leading-man good looks for thick-framed glasses, salt-and-pepper locks and a beard to play a cop in director Philip Yung’s crime drama about the grisly murder of a young prostitute.</p>
<p><strong>“Two Thumbs Up”</strong></p>

<p>No Hong Kong film festival would be complete without the stylish gangster flick. Francis Ng and Simon Yam, no strangers to the genre, head the cast in director Lau Ho-leung’s story about a group of thugs who pose as police officers to carry out their dirty tricks.</p>
<p><strong>“Beautiful 2015”</strong></p>

<p>The festival continues its “Beautiful” series with four separate short films on “understanding beauty” from four prominent directors: Mohsen Makhmalbaf (Iran), Tsai Ming-liang (Malaysian-born, Taiwan-based), Huang Jianxin (China) and Yim Ho (Hong Kong).</p>
<p><strong>“My City”</strong></p>

<p>Indie director Fruit Chan’s documentary focuses on popular author and poet Xi Xi, exploring her works in conversations with other writers and observations by the Hong Kong filmmaker. Mr. Chan, the festival says, “even playfully inserts characters from her stories into the film.”</p>
