<p>More on ‘the movie man’—</p>
<p>Like various other forms of socialist culture discussed in the post-socialist moment, film projection teams are often romanticized or reduced to propaganda tools of the state. Individual personal experiences and anecdotes support both positions. But the historical experiences of film projection are much more complex. I would suggest that mobile film projection is fascinating because of the relationship between: mobile film projection in varied spaces; film texts; availability and understandings of film technology; and practices and theories of socialist subjectivity (and its gendered dimensions). Moreover, mobile film projection is not only constitutive of socialist culture in the PRC, but also of post-socialist/neoliberal culture, both in the varied contemporary uses of mobile film projection by the Chinese state, NGOs, private companies, etc and the ways in which memories of socialist-era mobile film projection circulate.</p>
<p>For those interested, Tong Lam (U of Toronto), Thomas Lahusen (also, U of Toronto), and I have been working on a multi-media exploration of the changing technologies of mobile film projection and practices of taking film to the countryside from 1949 to the present. This project includes a documentary film, visual essays, photograph exhibits, and other more conventional academic work. We’re finally moving to the stage of the project where materials will be presented (and some list members may have heard very preliminary papers based on this research at conferences in the last year or so). We’re looking forward to sharing this research with MCLC list members as it becomes available. In the meantime, for others researching rural film projection, please get in touch with us directly.</p>
