<em><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Performance will be from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Laura Ellis was born and raised in the great jazz town of Kansas City and now calls Los Angeles her home.  A protégé of Alan Paul from the Grammy-award winning vocal ensemble, The Manhattan Transfer, she has performed for concert, festival, and cabaret audiences
 across the country.  Her specialty is America’s favorite music from decades past to the present.   An ardent fan of classic noir movies of the 40's and 50's and their music, Laura has been delighted to perform for the famed Noir City Film Festival at the Castro
 Theatre in San Francisco.  Her noir vocals are featured, as she sings the character of Kat, on the video game
<em><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Contrast</span></em>, released in 2013 by Compulsion Games and down-loaded nearly 2 million times.  In concert and cabaret venues, Laura’s velvety voice transports the listener back to the time when one note
 could change the whole mood of a song.  Accompanied by master pianist, John Rodby, she brings nuanced song-styling to the sultry and sassy songs of the past, as well as a new jazz sound to melodies of more recent vintage.  She has performed her blend of jazz
 and nostalgia at the renowned Jazz Alley in Seattle Feinstein's in San Francisco, the Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista, CA, and many other venues across the country.  Her broadcast credits include History Channel’s <em><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Route
 66</span></em> and <em><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Modern Marvels</span></em><strong><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">

<br>
In a four-year, critically acclaimed run of The Vintage Voice, Laura sang the songs of America’s greatest generation.  On tour with The Wonderelles, she and her co-stars channeled the music and moods of the famous “girl groups.”  Laura’s contemporary vocal
 jazz album, <em><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Here Lies Love</span></em>, was produced by Alan Paul.  Her 2011 release,
<em><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Femme Fatale</span></em>, features the classic songs from the dangerous dames of film noir. Her 2016 release,
<em><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Broken Lovely</span></em>, with musical direction by John Rodby, features Laura at her creative best, singing songs of the heart – broken, mending, and free.

This class will ask you to investigate the alien encounters that made “America.” When Old and New Worlds met, the clash shook identities and truths that had seemed eternal. The unthinkable became reality, and ideas that previous generations would have judged
 insane—democracy, for instance—became “American.” In this class, we will meet some of the criminals, captives, rebels, so-called “lunatics,” and outcasts who emerged as “American” authors, and we will examine the strange new literature they wove out of their
 experiences on the edge of the unknown. In short, we’ll try to map the development of an American psychology and understand the aliens in our own minds.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

In this class, we’ll examine the phenomenon of American “popular culture” by focusing on its strangest and most dynamic aspect: fan culture. One could argue that all fiction is fan fiction and that every film is a fan film, but this is explicitly true of many
 popular productions, which emerge out of an interaction with a restless public. We’ll investigate the nature of that interaction and figure out its rules and its mysterious purposes and effects. As we sweep through American history, you’ll learn about the
 origins of American pop culture and fandom (in sensational murder coverage and minstrel shows) and then track them through the dawn of Hollywood’s celebrity culture and into the internet and comic-con era with its explosion of fan-produced content. By the
 end of the course, you’ll participate in this process, too, by creating your own short fan fic or film.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
