The Israel and Judaica (IJ) Section at the Library of Congress continues to provide cutter numbers for literary authors. If there’s a number that a library would like LC to “reserve,” (if LC does not yet own
or LC staff have not yet cataloged works by that author), they could email Edie Creeger (ecre@loc.gov) or Nahid Gerstein (nger@loc.gov) to set up a “dummy” bibliographic record to save a
place for the author in the shelflist. Of course, PCC/HEB NACO libraries can always add the cutter themselves in an 053 _4 with $5 with their institutional code. If LC needs to add another number (if the PCC-Library designated number does not fit into the
LC shelflist), IJ Section staff can always add an additional 053 _0 field. If the PCC-Library designated number DOES fit the shelflist, we change the second indicator 4 to an 0.
