Barry, regarding a preposition being an "integral part", as far as
I know it doesn't make a difference; unless the word with the
preposition appears on its own in the dictionary, it's still
considered a "little word" and is separated from the main word
with a hyphen.
I'll let someone else field the Li-fene question, but as far as
Pitedah is concerned: there's a sheva there because tet and dalet
are both dentals, per the practice noted on p. 11 of Maher in the
case of "mitpalelim." I suppose that would be a sheva na'. The
sheva is our friend, and it's here to help.
My two cents, I defer to Those Who Know, etc. etc.
