<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Garamond","serif"">The space-time prism (STP) is a key concept in Time Geography that captures both spatial and temporal constraints on individuals’ mobility. Prisms with larger volumes are viewed
as more beneficial since they imply higher potential mobility and greater accessibility. However, this assumption ignores the negative consequences of the motorized accessibility, such as energy consumption, air quality, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
This talk will discuss the research that measures these mobility-related costs of STPs. We apply stochastic processes to simulate individual movements within STPs (e.g. Brownian bridges and Markov chain), derive properties within the prisms interior (e.g.
the probability to visit a location among all reachable locations), and validate them using GPS trajectories data collected in the real-world. We then employ a motor vehicle emission simulator called MOVESLite and combined it with the derived properties of
a STP to estimate its energy consumption and emissions (e.g. CO2). The estimated costs can be used to develop cost-benefit accessibility measures under the paradigm of sustainability, as well as complete the theoretical framework of time geography by depicting
its interior properties.</span><span style="font-family:"Garamond","serif""><o:p></o:p></span></p>
