The event will be hosted both in person on the OSU campus in Denney 311 and via zoom at the link below from 4:00-5:30 PM EST. https://osu.zoom.us/j/96861262408?pwd=Uy9TZE1vSExIQTl1NzYwTU9PWG1zQT09 ?Forty Devils Can?t Make Me Obey You?: To Tell A True Story In Sisterlocking Discoarse, I draw upon African American storytelling traditions, cultural contexts, and collective sites of memory to discuss how I experienced the academy as a Black woman. The recollections and reflections cohere in surprising ways, encapsulating the texture of what it feels like to be diverse in white spaces of leadership. As both writer and reader of my experiences, I will focus on the various voices that intermingle with mine?voices from my grandmother, children, colleagues, student advisees, African American authors, and 19th century enslaved African women. We hope you can join us for this exciting event! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. Would you please circulate the attached flyer with your listservs? Attached is the flyer for Enzo Vasquez Toral?s scholarship presentation during his visit. Zoom link, passcode information, and feedback link/QR code are all embedded in the PDF flyer. Thank you so much! Title: Performing Queer Indigeneity in the Andean Patron-Saint Fiesta Abstract: This talk traces the ways queer men and trans women have redefined ritual cross-dressing in danzas (dance-dramas) showcased in folkloric patron-saint festivals in Peru and Bolivia. Centering on masking and costuming, aspects central to danzas and sustained by Indigenous traditions and epistemologies in the Andes, underscores how queer and trans individuals perform queer indigeneity as they enact change to tradition alongside cisgender females who perform with them. Bio: Enzo Vasquez Toral is a theater artist and scholar whose work focuses on contemporary queer and trans performance in Andean folklore. Vasquez Toral?s work has appeared or is forthcoming in journals such as Modern Drama, El Alto, Theatre Journal, Ecumenica, Theatre Annual, Latin American Theatre Review, and Performance Research; and in edited works such as Keywords for Further Consideration, The Routledge Companion to Theatre and Performance Historiography, Queer Nightlife, and The Methuen Drama Handbook to Theatre and Gender. His solo theater piece Cuir Devotion has been showcased in university campuses in the US since 2019. Vasquez Toral holds MA degrees from Northwestern University and Princeton University, and a BA from Harvard University. He is currently PhD Candidate in Performance Studies at Northwestern University and Lecturer at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. ZjQcmQRYFpfptBannerEnd Dear Belief Narrative Network / ISFNR members, dear Friends, dear Colleagues, The 22nd online lecture of the ISFNR Belief Narrative Network Online Lecture Series will be given on Friday, 2nd December, at 5 p.m. CET by Dr. Jenny Butler (Cork University, Ireland). Her talk is titled "Fairy Belief Narratives, Indigenous Knowledge and Connection to Place". Please find the abstract, the speaker's short bio and link (with password) to the zoom meeting below. This presentation approaches fairy belief narratives as indigenous knowledge, as cultural memory, and meaningful connection to the land and sites upon and within it. On the Irish landscape, there exist so-called ?fairy places?, especially ?fairy trees? (hawthorn) and ?fairy forts? (ringforts). The Irish mythology records the aos s?, the mythical ?people of the mounds? who inhabit the ?hollow hills?, living underground beneath their human neighbours. The term ?fairy? came to be used during the colonisation of Ireland when the population was forced to speak English instead of Gaelic and when the placenames were anglicised, thus losing meanings found in the native language. This, alongside many processes of change and modernisation, led to a disconnection of people and place particularly with regard to general awareness of how the otherworldly realm is intertwined with the physical terrain in the traditional worldview. This presentation explores the present-day status of fairy lore and connection to these sites. Based in ethnographic research in Ireland, reference will also be made to comparative research findings in Iceland and in Newfoundland, Canada. Dr Jenny Butler is a Lecturer in the Study of Religions Department at University College Cork and is the President of the Irish Society for the Academic Study of Religions (ISASR). Her research focuses on otherworld traditions, intangible cultural heritage, ritual, and the intersections of religion and folklore.
