<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif;color:black">“The course gave me lasting friendships with the colleagues I volunteered with. Further, the course gave me personal experience within the D/deaf community and furthered my knowledge of inclusivity
and all that entails. The service learning course is one of my most memorable undergraduate experiences and played an immense role in shaping me into an attorney hoping to work in offices that ensure accessibility for all students, with that passion beginning
in the fight for disability accessibility. I think that a major part of advocating for accessibility is being aware of and introduced to communities other than those you are personally a part of. I could go on and on about the importance of sign language and
all aspects of accessibility in society that go along with it, and of course the doors opened and bonds forged with strangers just by virtue of being acquainted with the language. But to keep it short the service learning class (and for that matter, all ASL
courses as they were extremely comprehensive and included important cultural lessons) has left me forever aware of access barriers to D/deaf folks and therefore able to recognize those barriers whenever they arise in a context that I am able to speak up in.
So thank you for broadening my life experiences and perspectives to allow me to remember to include D/deaf individuals in my advocacy.”
