Microsoft does have a solution as part of Office365, Stream, but I don't know if OCIO has elected to turn it on. I think it might be worth asking.

I just created a test presentation on MediaSite, set to allow everyone, made a simple HTML file. Testing in Chrome, it works on my normal (shib-authed) window, but not in incognito, nor in an un-shib authed Firefox window, so it seems they still have not resolved the issues. And they may never. My understanding is they don't want it used as a general video host, it's meant for use in courses only.

The tag is here if you want to try it for yourself:

Thanks Richard, a good list of the shortcomings of MediaSite.

MediaSite can be really slow to use, uploading and processing. When I switched to telework at the beginning of the pandemic I had to switch ISPs and get faster broadband in order to get anything done with MediaSite. I use a combination of Otter.ai<https://otter.ai/> and manual caption editing to get the .srt caption files that MediaSite likes. They’ve more recently simplified the permission settings to bypass Shibboleth and let all view without logging in. A few years ago the settings to ‘share to all’ were really convoluted.

Maybe Ohio State will switch to a better video hosting and 'lecture capture' platform in the future. I've heard good things about Kaltura<https://corp.kaltura.com/education-video-platform/lecture-capture/> but I'm not sure how well it would do for public-facing videos in sites. TechSmith Relay/Knowmia<https://www.techsmith.com/techsmith-relay-features.html> is also a great 'lecture capture' platform but I haven't tried it for embedding public-facing videos in websites.

When last we tried it a couple of years ago:

  1. Slow to load, no VBR
  2. Upload post processing is very slow.
  3. Was forcing Shibboleth to view, even when set to allow everyone
  4. Just plain didn't work in Safari
  5. No auto-generated subtitles - they were evaluating some options like IBM Watson but my understanding is it was dropped for lack of budget/resources

Unless at least the first few of these were solved in the interim, it's not a solution.

We currently offer YouTube and Vimeo embedding.

What are the disadvantages or embedding videos from OSU Mediasite?

Is it that you don’t get variable bitrate streaming by default like YouTube? One time I noticed a video in a Canvas course was slow to load on a slower connection and had to request variable bitrate streaming be enabled from ODEE.

Youtube is apparently changing its ToS to allow it to monetize non-partner videos. From email:

YouTube has the right to monetize all content on the platform and ads may appear on videos from channels not in the YouTube Partner Program.

This could mean embedded videos start showing ads. Since OSU Mediasite isn't useful for embedding video, any thoughts?
