<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman"">I would like to share the exciting upcoming Goodspeed Conference<i>,</i> organized by the Department:<i> Confronting Mara and Mammon: Buddhist-Christian Dialogue for Spirituality and </i><i>Resistance </i>(Feb. 13
to Feb. 16).</span></p>

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman"">This multi-day conference will bring seventeen renowned engaged Buddhist scholars, activists, and Christian liberation theologians, including Womanist Buddhist Jen Willis, Womanist Ethicist Melanie Harris, Engaged
Buddhist Scholars Sallie King and John Makransky, Liberation theologian Joerg Rieger, and Interfaith Pluralism Theologian Paul Knitter. Through the lens of religion and critical social theories, the speakers will discuss the five areas in human society that
have created the collective injustice or human suffering, such as global poverty, environmental destruction, religious fundamentalism, war, and gender/race/sexuality-based discrimination. Their talks will engage how religion/spirituality can organize or motivate
people to resist structural injustice. </span></p>

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman"">The conference is beginning with a pre-conference talk, "Why interfaith dialogue for now?: Spiritual Journey and Social Justice" on Wednesday, February 13 (7 PM, Burton Morgan Lecture Hall), and will feature scholarly
presentations on Thursday Evening (7 PM, Slayter Auditorium) and all day Friday (9:30 AM to 5:45 PM), and end with the Compassion, Love, Awakening Meditation retreat led by Ruben Habito and John Makransky (for more information about Lama Dr. Makransky’s publications

John Makransky is a professor of Buddhism and Comparative Theology at Boston College and a Tibetan Buddhist meditation teacher. John has practiced meditations of compassion and wisdom from Tibetan traditions for over thirty years and has developed new ways
of bringing them into the worlds of social service and social justice by making them newly accessible to people of all backgrounds and faiths.</div>
