Some people are forgetting to have their TA sign the notebook pages<br>
or to turn in the carbons from the notebook at the end of lab. Make<br>
sure your name and exp number is at the top of every page and you<br>
sign and date every page. Then make sure your TA signs your
notebook<br>
pages. You tear out the carbons, staple them and give them to the
TA<br>
before leaving lab. It's best to do this right at the TA's bench
after they<br>
sign the pages so you don't forget. Technically, if this isn't done
it means<br>
you are supposed to redo the experiment. You will need to bring the
carbon<br>
pages to me and I will make the decision on whether you will have to<br>
redo the exp. If you do, you will not be given extra time outside
of lab to<br>
redo the experiment and thus may not be able to complete it which
could<br>
result in a zero for the exp.<br>
<br>
Remember to have your notebooks prepared when you walk into lab. <br>
You should have your notebook out and opened before the video.<br>
During the video the TA is supposed to quickly come down the isles<br>
and check to see if your purpose, procedure and data tables have <br>
been written. Later during the lab they will check things like
s.f., <br>
units, readability, whether it's written in your own words in an
outline<br>
form similar to my example, etc. They will also check to see if you
are<br>
putting things directly into the notebook and not in the manual or
other<br>
pieces of paper. You will lose points if these things have not been
done.<br>
<br>
<b>NEVER </b>tear the white notebook pages (originals) out of the
notebook.<br>
As I've been perusing some notebooks I've noticed the pages are
missing.<br>
In the reports I've noticed some people have been tearing out their<br>
notebook pages and scanning them for the report procedure. You
should<br>
not do this. The white pages stay in the notebook. You don't need
to even<br>
scan them for the report. We don't want the whole procedure in the
report,<br>
just a bibliographic reference and any changes made to the
procedure. <br>
<br>
I often suggest the calculations for the report be done in your
notebook as<br>
a record for yourself but your sample calculations should be typed
in your<br>
document or written on a piece of regular notebook paper or printer
paper<br>
and scanned for the reports. It is easier for the TA to read when
"normal"<br>
paper is used. If anything is difficult to read the TA will deduct
points. They<br>
shouldn't have to struggle to determine what you've written in order
to grade it.<br>
<br>
<b>NEVER use pencil</b>. <b>PEN </b>is to be used for the
notebooks. If you make a<br>
mistake simply put a single line through it and write the correct
thing next<br>
to the mistake.<br>
<br>
<b>NEVER</b> write data/observations anywhere but in the notebook
during lab.<br>
<br>
<font size="2"><big>The reports need to be typed (other than the
sample calcs, as explained above).<br>
There should be one SINGLE document in the proper format. It is
also your<br>
responsibility to make sure it uploads properly. Check the
uploaded file to<br>
make sure it's there and can be read. We've found using other
things besides<br>
Word to produce a .docx file don't always produce a "proper"
.docx file and<br>
the report doesn't show up. If you're not using Word to produce
a .docx<br>
file you need to make sure it uploads and is visible. Producing
a PDF file<br>
from such programs seems to work. The guidelines for this are
on Carmen.<br>
<br>
Just so everyone is aware of this, Microsoft Office is available
free of charge<br>
through the university.<br>
<br>
</big></font> I know most of you have been doing the proper things
so please don't feel<br>
this is aimed at you. Also, I know people who don't turn in the
carbons<br>
often just forget to do so. These are simply reminders of these
things so<br>
you don't forget and then find yourself losing points or redoing an
exp.<br>
