I apologize if you are getting this and you are not signed up for Chem 1220.<br>
I got the current roster with your e-mails from the registrar (SIS, Buckeyelink).<br>
In a follow-up e-mails I'll discuss the textbook options and recitations. <br>
<br>
The semester starts on Tuesday, 8/25/20. We have lecture that day.<br>
<br>
There’s a lot of special things going on due to COVID-19.<br>
<br>
Our lectures will be held remotely via Zoom. The are already set up in<br>
Carmen. You should see them in your schedule on Carmen. There's a<br>
link on our Carmen course page and there's a Zoom link in the menu.<br>
<br>
Some of you have recitation scheduled for Tuesday as well. However, the<br>
first recitation for Tuesday on 8/25 is voluntary for students. The TA will<br>
be "there" via Zoom.<br>
<br>
At least one recitation section has in-person recitations. The rest are<br>
online. They will be doing things in the same way for all recitation<br>
sections. Your TAs should be sending you e-mail about your recitations.<br>
They will take attendance during recitations. You will get points for<br>
recitation attendance. There's more details in the syllabus and I will<br>
send a follow-up e-mail about recitations and quizzes.<br>

For lab, the plan right now is for three of the labs to be in person. The<br>
rest will be done digitally. <br>
<br>
No one has lab the first week of classes. The lab supervisor will be<br>
sending e-mails with details about the labs. See the lab syllabus on Carmen<br>
and my webpages for details.<br>
<br>
The class Carmen pages will be activated later today, Sunday, so you<br>
can start checking on material which will be due the first week of classes.<br>
There are mandatory quizzes which are due by 11:59 PM Sunday,<br>
8/30. I'll let you know when it goes live. There may be some changes<br>
which have to be made.<br>

You will access MasteringChemistry and the eText through the<br>
MyLab and Mastering link in the menu for the course. If you took<br>
1210/1220 w/in the last 12 months you should still have access to<br>
the eText and MC. There are already some things set up for the first<br>
and second weeks. For the first week there's only one thing for credit,<br>
"Chapter 11 Review" (due by 11:59 PM Sat, 8/29). More about the<br>
online homework in a follow-up e-mails.<br>

If you are on a wait list I'm sending this info to you as well so you know<br>
it if and when you get in the course. You can get to all the material on<br>
my web pages but you won't have access to Carmen. If you are still on<br>
the wait list when we start next week I encourage you to come to lecture.<br>
However, to do this you'll need to let me know so I can send you the link to<br>
the Zoom lectures.<br>

Then go to the "Notes" link. There you will find a copy of the notes<br>
(overheads) I will be using in lecture. I highly suggest you print them<br>
and bring them with you (print them with two pages to a single physical<br>
page to save paper). Technically, we start with chapter 13 but I will<br>
cover a few things you need from ch 11 first. Just print Ch 13 for<br>
now since I may be making some minor changes to some of the later<br>
chapters. You will also see what sections from 1210 you should review.<br>
Do that now before we start rather than starting chapter 13. Pay<br>
particular attention to ch 11 (attractive forces, properties of liquids,<br>
vapor pressure, heat of vaporization, boiling point - things needed for<br>
exp 14 and ch 13) and ch 12 (which is the material you need to know<br>
concerning solids and taken from ch 11 of the 11th edition of the<br>
textbook). There's three links from the 12th ed. dealing with solids.<br>
You probably won't need to know much about unit cells and related<br>
calculations. <br>

There's also a link to a table about the types of solids, their attractive<br>
forces and their properties (which depend on their AF). It is very<br>
important to understand this material since we will be talking about<br>
solubility of solids, which depends on AF. The link is,<br>

My plan is to make prerecorded videos and post those. I would prefer you<br>
watch these before our Zoom lecture. I will then hold Zoom lectures<br>
during our normal lecture time. My hope is if you've watched the prerecorded<br>
videos I won't have to repeat them, at least not in their entirety, but instead<br>
go over the most important and difficult concepts and allow you to ask more<br>
questions. We'll see how this works. If it looks to me like this isn't working<br>
I may skip the prerecorded videos and just go to Zoom lectures. In any case<br>
the Zoom lectures will be recorded and posted. Both sets of these videos<br>
will be posted in Carmen.<br>

I have pre-recorded videos for chapters 11 and 12 up already for you to<br>
listen to in order to review the material you need from those chapters for<br>
1220. I will leave it up to you to do this before the first lecture this coming<br>
Tue. Plus, there will be material for Ch 13 up in the next day or so.<br>
<br>
The Zoom lectures are set up so your name will show during the lecture. This<br>
is the university default. This will be the same for recitation periods in which the<br>
TA will be present in Zoom. This is to aid in taking attendance.<br>
<br>
I won't lie to you. This class will be tough. This class is going to move<br>
pretty quickly and the material is generally more difficult than the material<br>
you covered in Chem 1210. You saw most of the 1210 material in high<br>
school. Most of you will not have seen the material in 1220 in high school,<br>
especially at the level at which we cover it. Plan on spending at about 15<br>
hours a week outside of class just on lecture material and homework and<br>
another 3-4 on lab work (preparation, reports, etc.). That's about 19 hours<br>
per week outside of class.<br>
<br>
There may be times due to the nature of the book material and lab material<br>
it might take more or less time than 19 hours. Just plan on the latter.<br>
<br>
I've been teaching most of this material for about 28 years. I know very<br>
well what things you need from this course for courses down the road and<br>
exams you may some day take to get into graduate or professional school.<br>
<br>
